Drug Rehab

Drug rehab is a process of therapeutic or medical intervention for addiction to psychoactive drugs like prescription drugs, alcohol, and street drugs for which the person develops physical dependence. The first step in this direction is identifying the problem. Based on the severity and nature of the problem, the drug rehab center recommends the drug rehab program. In this regard, it is important to know that drug abuse is not a disease; hence, it does not warrant any cure or medication. Hence, we need to be more specific about the drug rehab program. Generally, there are two types of treatment in drug rehab: inpatient and outpatient. An inpatient treatment is often preferred for those who require prolonged inpatient care, especially in cases like heavy addiction or severe mental illness. Patients undergoing outpatient rehab treatment can go for short term care or be treated at home. Both inpatient and outpatient services are offered in many drug rehab facilities.

In general, drug rehab centers offer different treatments for different kinds of addictions. For example, smoking is one of the most common forms of addiction and smokers are treated with smoking cessation therapies. For other kinds of addictions, patients are treated with individual therapies, group therapy, family therapy, and psychotherapy. Inpatient treatment programs involve a fixed pattern of daily intake of medications. The number of medications generally increases during the first week and stays at that level for the duration of the rehab. On the basis of the results achieved by each patient, the treatment program is modified. Generally, medication is given after a patient undergoes an extensive therapy including self-help, cognitive behavior therapy, and lifestyle therapy.

Intensive medication, in addition to the standard therapy, is given in case of mild to severe cases of addiction. Also called “holistic therapies,” these programs aim at clearing the mind and purging all the subconscious tendencies that trigger relapses. Another important part of drug rehabilitation is to devise a sober living program to avoid relapse. Relapse prevention is very essential. If the addict requires inpatient treatment, outpatient programs are also quite successful in treating alcohol addicts. An inpatient treatment approach is useful for patients suffering from mild to severe alcohol addiction. Drug rehabilitation centers offer complete support for their patients. Treatment process varies from one center to another.

Drug Rehab Programs

Drug rehab inpatient rehab programs offer several advantages to patients. They include medical guidance and expert medical care. In a patient rehab, medical supervision offers patients the chance to undergo detoxification under the observation of a qualified physician. Also, experts conduct daily evaluations and prescribe medicines according to the physical status of the patient. Generally, inpatient treatment is followed by outpatient programs. Outpatient drug treatment programs are characterized by shorter period of stay in the facility and strict monitored day-to-day activities. Patients may visit outpatient drug rehab facilities only when they need urgent medical care or counseling. However, outpatient rehab is a good option for long-term treatment. For patients, who do not require inpatient treatment, outpatient programs offer an easy way to kick the habit. Although the mode of treatment varies from one center to another, there are several common points that remain unchanged.

In every drug rehab program, the first step is called the 12-step program. This program helps the patients in realizing their problems and the root cause of addiction. Steps like honesty, guilt, depression, anger, shame and pride play a major role in transforming a patient into an emotionally stable individual. The 12-step program makes the patient understand the consequences of his/her behavior. It also helps them realize that they cannot get rid of the problem on their own. Therefore, it becomes necessary for them to seek the help of others like family members, friends, support groups and professionals in order to achieve long-term sobriety.

Another aspect of treatment is the participation in different types of activities. Drug addiction is not limited to one type of substance use. Different types of substances have different effects on the human body. Therefore, a patient might require individual counseling to address his/her issues related to specific substance use. Counseling in most drug rehab facilities provides the required emotional and mental support to the patients. Some centers might offer individual or group counseling. The need for this is very essential as it helps the patients in dealing with their issues. This will make the patients feel comfortable and relaxed in the presence of their caretakers. Many drug treatment centers have various kinds of personality adjustment programs which are designed specifically to meet the needs of different patients.
